What is Adventure Tubing, and is it for me?
Put simply, Adventure Tubing combines a calm flat-water float on a comfortable inflatable tube with a remote-feeling, road-free natural environment. It's both rugged and relaxing!
The key differences from traditional river tubing are that the water is deeper with more obstacles to avoid, and that you won't be floating along any roads or past any buildings or driveways. Both are advantages in that you'll rarely if ever be bumping along shallow rocks like you may have elsewhere, and the scenery is gorgeous!
At the same time, though, deeper water means that if you do manage to get yourself stuck somewhere, you probably won't be able to just stand up and walk away. And the roadless environment means there's no easy way to walk out from the river or get picked up along the way.
For those reasons, Adventure Tubing should only be undertaken by people who would be comfortable swimming in the river if necessary, and who have sufficient upper body strength to paddle aggressively away from obstacles. This applies to EVERY PERSON on the trip! The minimum age for Adventure Tubing is 13, and we recommend any group including senior citizens call us to make sure the trip is appropriate for all participants.
Lazy Otter Outfitters is ideally located for fun and relaxing Adventure Tubing trips along the French Broad. From our headquarters at the end of the Horse Shoe Bend, it's a quick three-minute shuttle ride to the public access at Cummings Road. From there, float four miles in about two hours (depending on water levels) through a dedicated conservation easement right back to your car. No waiting for another shuttle to pick you up!
Our tubes are all deluxe commercial-quality tubes with back rests, a cup holder and handles, with a weight limit of 280 pounds. They come in small (44-inch diameter) and large (48-inch diameter) sizes. The price of the tubing trip is $25 per person, including a paddle. We also include a spare tube with each group that can be used as a cooler or "luggage" float and as a spare tube if by chance one pops on the way. It's a great deal!
For the sake of safety and enjoyment, Adventure Tubing is only available at certain water levels. Check our Facebook page or blog for updates on the current status. If you are not able to select tubing as an option on a particular day in our online reservation system, that means tubing is not available or we have not yet made a determination for that day. If you'd like to reserve a trip further in advance, please choose one of our kayak or canoe options.
