WE MADE IT! We told you we weren’t kidding! We just got the last needed approval from the county and while we’ve still got plenty to do to make everything just the way we want it, we’ll be able to start taking a limited number of folks this weekend for self-guided trips from Blantyre (10 miles on the river) or Penrose (13 miles). We’re still getting our online reservation system ready so for this weekend we’ll be doing everything by first-come first-served reservation only, either by email at email@example.com or by phone at (828)756-1386.
We’ll make two runs each on Saturday and Sunday mornings, at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., at a special rate of $40 per person from either put-in for travel in a solo or tandem kayak or in a canoe (the third person in a canoe is $20). Payments for this weekend must be by credit card only. You must be 13 or older to go solo in a kayak, and there must be at least one adult 18 or over in a tandem kayak or canoe. Minimum age for passengers is six years old, and all participants of any age must be able to swim. Everyone must sign a liability waiver, and parents or legal guardians must sign for children (it can’t just be any adult escort, it must be the parent or guardian).
Be aware that water levels are unusually low right now, exposing more obstacles in the river. Beginners should only paddle with someone experienced and everyone should feel comfortable maneuvering his or her boat.
We can also shuttle your own boat for you to either put-in and allow you to park one car and take out here at Lazy Otter for a fee of $20 per boat. If you would just like to park a car on our property and use our boat ramp but do your own shuttle, the cost is $10 per car on weekends (that cost will be $5 per car Monday to Friday).
As we get going we’ll get all these details and options up on our web site and make booking, payment and waiver signing very easy from your computer or mobile device. Thanks for your patience with us and your support as we get ourselves off the ground! We’re so grateful for all the support and encouragement that we’ve gotten from literally everyone we’ve met and talked to about Lazy Otter Outfitters, and we can’t wait to help everyone experience this beautiful part of the French Broad River!
