Beauty on the French Broad

Lazy Otter Outfitters is located on one of the prettiest stretches of the French Broad River - an area away from busy roads, industrial sites and crowds but filled with calm waters, birds and (of course) otters! We can help you explore the river for yourself!

We offer self-guided paddle trips from four to 13 miles in distance, or roughly two to six hours:

The Sierra Nevada Express makes it easy to cap off a float on the French Broad with a pint of your favorite Sierra Nevada brew - and right from the source! 

 

By popular demand, Lazy Otter Outfitters is offering special trips that will make it easy to enjoy Sierra Nevada's world-class Mills River brewery and tap room after your paddle adventure! Explore seven miles of the French Broad River starting and ending at Westfeldt Park. This trips takes most people two-and-a-half to three hours on the water.

 

We'll pick you up at Westfeldt Park near the Asheville Airport for the 15-minute drive to Lazy Otter HQ on the banks of the French Broad in Horse Shoe. Your kayaks or canoes will be lined up and ready to go for the seven-mile paddle back to Westfeldt, which is just down the road from Sierra Nevada. We'll meet you there to collect your boats, and it will take you less than five minutes to drive up the hill to the brewery. The price of the Sierra Nevada Express trip is $43/person in a standard solo or tandem kayak or a canoe, or $48 in a deluxe solo kayak or SUP.  Book this trip now

Our four-mile paddle trip is a self-guided float from the public river access on Highway 64 at Cummings Road back to Lazy Otter HQ, which will take one-and-a-half to two hours depending on your effort and water flows.

You'll come to our location to sign in and listen to the safety briefing, and we'll take you on a short, three-minute shuttle ride to the put-in. You'll paddle your way around the Horse Shoe Bend, admiring the wildlife and beautiful trees and timber with no roads or buildings to spoil the view. You'll take out back at Lazy Otter HQ, where your car is waiting for you with no need for another shuttle!

The price of the four-mile self-guided trip is $32 per person in a standard solo kayak, a tandem kayak, or a canoe. The third person in the middle seat of a canoe floats for just $20! The deluxe solo kayak and the stand-up paddle boards are $37 each for the trip. (Experience required for SUP rental!)  Book this trip now

Our seven-mile paddle trip is a self-guided float from Lazy Otter HQ to the public Westfeldt access near the Asheville Airport and Sierra Nevada brewery, where you will be picked up by our shuttle bus and returned to your car, a ride of just about 15 minutes. The price of the seven-mile self-guided paddle is $38 per person in a standard solo kayak, a tandem kayak, or a canoe. The third person in the middle seat of a canoe floats for just $20! The deluxe solo kayak or SUP is $43 per person. Our 11-mile paddle trip is a self-guided float from the Horse Shoe/Etowah public access past Lazy Otter HQ to the public Westfeldt access near the Asheville Airport and Sierra Nevada brewery, where you will be picked up by our shuttle bus and returned to your car at Lazy Otter HQ. The price of the 11-mile self-guided paddle is $50 per person in a standard solo kayak, a tandem kayak, or a canoe. The third person in the middle seat of a canoe floats for just $20! A deluxe solo kayak is $55 per person. This trip takes most people about five hours on the water.  Book this trip now

Our 13-mile paddle trips start upstream from Lazy Otter at the Penrose put-in and float back to our riverside location, where your car is waiting for you. The float from Penrose is very calm and natural, with few roads or houses along the way. We'll take you from Lazy Otter HQ to the put-in, and  you can set your own pace as you paddle. Be sure to keep an eye out for beavers, birds, and of course those otters!  The price of the 13-mile paddle is $60 per person, or $20 for the third person in a canoe.
